ABOUT IDSS

Strengthening Africa's dredging industry through competence.

International Dredging Support Services (IDSS) operates as a dedicated technical support, training and industry development arm of Dredging Engineering Works Ltd.

WHO WE ARE

Bridging the technical gap in African marine engineering.

IDSS was established to directly address the critical shortage of practical dredging competence across Africa. As maritime infrastructure, port expansions, land reclamation projects and waterway channel maintenance expand rapidly, the need for qualified, safety-conscious personnel becomes paramount.

Through our parent organization, Dredging Engineering Works Ltd—a leading Nigerian dredging contractor and local contractor to Ellicott Dredges of Baltimore, Maryland, USA—IDSS leverages decadal industry experience, operational assets and international OEM channels to deliver high-impact workforce programmes.

THE INDUSTRY CHALLENGE

Africa needs a stronger dredging workforce.

Despite the strategic importance of coastal and inland waterways, African dredging operations frequently face critical operational bottlenecks due to structural skill gaps.

01

Shortage of Skilled Professionals

Acute deficit of certified dredge operators, marine superintendents and hydrographic field technicians.

02

Limited Practical Training

Over-reliance on theoretical instruction without hands-on simulator or vessel deck equipment experience.

03

Equipment Maintenance Gaps

Preventable mechanical failures caused by inadequate preventative maintenance procedures.

04

Operational Inefficiencies

Sub-optimal production rates, incorrect slurry density handling and excessive wear on cutter heads.

05

Safety & Compliance Risks

Inconsistent adoption of international maritime safety protocols and environmental management systems.

06

Access to Global Expertise

Isolating African marine operations from international technical developments and OEM manufacturer standards.

07

Weak Academia Connections

Mismatch between university engineering curricula and real-world commercial dredging requirements.

08

Insufficient Career Pathways

Lack of structured professional development frameworks for young African engineers entering the marine sector.
